Tael

Chinese unit of weight corresponding to the European ounce and sometimes referred to as a liang. It was a measure of silver varying between 32 and 39 grams. In the nineteenth century it served as money of account, 100 British or Mexican trade dollars being worth 72 tael The term has also been loosely applied to the Chinese silver yuan although this was worth only .72 tael or 7 mace and 2 candareens (10 candareens = 1 mace; 10 mace = 1 tael).
