Sceat

Money of account in Kent early in the seventh century as the twelfth part of a shilling or Merovingian gold tremissis. As a silver coin, it dates from about AD 680-700 and weighed about 20 grains, putting it on par with the Merovingian denier or penny. Sceats spread to other parts of England in the eighth century but tended to decline in weight and value, but from about 760 it was gradually superseded by the silver penny minted under Offa and his successors. (Anglo-Saxon for 'treasure',or German Schatz)
