Numismatic definitions

Like most fields of expertise, numismatics has its own lingo. Find the numismatic definition of a term by entering it in the field below.

Platinum

The noblest of all precious metals, platinum has a higher specific gravity than gold and a harder brighter surface than silver. Until an industrial application was discovered in the mid-nineteenth century it was regarded as of little value, and was popular with counterfeiters as a cheap substitute for gold in their forgeries which, with a light gold wash, could be passed off as genuine. It was first used for circulating coins in Russia (the chief source of the metal since 1819) and 3, 6 and 12 rouble coins were mined at various times between 1828 and 1845. In recent years platinum has been a popular metal for limited-edition proof coins.
