Numismatic definitions

Like most fields of expertise, numismatics has its own lingo. Find the numismatic definition of a term by entering it in the field below.

Incuse

Impression which cuts into the surface of a coin or medal, as opposed to the more usual raised relief. Many of the earliest coins, especially those with a device on one side only, bear an incuse impression often in a geometric pattern. An incuse impression appears on one side of the coins, reflecting the image on the other side. Few modern coins have had an incuse design, notable examples being the American half and quarter eagle gold coins of 1908-29 designed by Bela Pratt. Incuse inscriptions on a raised rim, however, are more common, and include the British Cartwheel coins of 1797 and the 20p coins since 1982.
