Numismatic definitions

Like most fields of expertise, numismatics has its own lingo. Find the numismatic definition of a term by entering it in the field below.

Holed

Term denoting two different categories:

  • coins which have been pierced for suspension as a form of jewellery or talisman
  • coins which have a hole as part of their design. In the latter category come the Chinese cash with a square hole, and numerous issues of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from many countries, with the object of reducing weight and metal without sacrificing overall diameter.
