Cupellation
Process by which gold and silver were separated from lead and other impurities in their ores. A cupel is a shallow cup of bone-ash or other absorbent material which, when hot, absorbs any molten material that wets its surface. Lead melts and oxidises with impurities into the cupel, where as gold and silver remain on the cupel. Cupellation is also used in assaying the fineness of these precious metals.
