The new 12-sided bimetallic £1 coin was put into circulation on March 28, 2017 and the legal tender status of the round 1 pound coin was withdrawn at midnight on October 15, 2017. It has been replaced for the first time in over thirty years because of its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters (approximately 1/30 round £1 coins in circulation was a counterfeit). From this date shops and businesses should no longer accept these coins, but you can still take them to your bank or donate them.
